A recent study suggests that the most common type of sexual dysfunction, sexual desire disorder, was linked to low levels of sexual functioning.
The study, published in the journalHuman Sexuality and Sexual Behavior, was conducted among men aged 50 to 59 in the United States. Men in the study reported having low sexual function and, for some, erectile dysfunction. In addition, sexual function was linked to low levels of sexual desire and/or desire for sex, and to problems with sexual fulfillment.
The researchers used the data from the study to determine the number of men with low sexual function, erectile dysfunction, and/or sexual fulfillment.
The researchers identified two groups of men, which are more likely to have low sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment. In the first group, men with low sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment reported a lower percentage of erectile dysfunction than those in the other two groups. In addition, the two groups were similar in terms of their level of sexual functioning. The researchers did not compare the number of men with erectile dysfunction to men with erectile dysfunction.
The study authors said that their findings are consistent with that published in the same journal.
“The authors concluded that their findings do not support the theory that low sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment are linked,” the authors wrote in a press release. “However, these findings suggest that sexual dysfunction can be linked to low levels of sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment.”
The researchers also explained that their findings are not consistent with the idea that sexual dysfunction is a direct effect of low sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment.
“This study is important in light of the fact that the relationship between low sexual function and erectile dysfunction is controversial,” said Dr. Michael O. Rosen, a urologist and director of the National Institute of Urology’s Sexual Medicine Program in Washington, DC.
Dr. Alan M. Ochsner, a urologist at the National Center for Health Research in Bethesda, MD, said that “the evidence base for sexual dysfunction is complex and does not always reflect current medical knowledge.”
“Sexual dysfunction is a complex issue that requires careful interpretation and treatment,” he added.
Michael J. Ochsner, the chief of urology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said that the research was the first of its kind, and the study’s findings were important to explain why men with low sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment might experience a decrease in sexual fulfillment and/or erectile dysfunction.
“The researchers identified two different groups of men, who were more likely to have low sexual function and/or sexual fulfillment, than men without low sexual function,” the authors wrote in a press release.
According to Dr. John M. Mazzarini, M. D., chairman of urology at the University of California, San Francisco, and professor of urology at the University of California, San Francisco, and coauthor of the study, “This suggests that a causal relationship exists between low sexual function and erectile dysfunction. The relationship could be a result of sexual dysfunction and/or a lack of sexual desire,” he said.
Mazzarini is the chief of urology at the University of California, San Francisco, with a focus on sexual fulfillment and erectile dysfunction.
